Virat Kohli steps down as T20 captain

  • Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla on Thursday said the Indian cricket board respects Virat Kohli's decision to step down as T20i captain after the T20 World Cup in the UAE in October-November.
  •  Kohli said he took the call after long deliberation with head coach Ravi Shastri and his vice-captain Rohit Sharma.
  • Kohli maintained that he will continue to lead India in the ODI and the Test formats. The star batsman said he arrived at the decision after considering his workload, which he believes has been immense in the last 8-9 years.
  • Kohli took over as T20I captain from MS Dhoni in 2017 and will be leading India in his maiden T20 World Cup in the UAE.
  • "Virat Kohli's contribution to the Indian T20 cricket team as captain was immense. It can never be forgotten. This is his personal decision and we respect it," Rajeev Shukla said in a social media post.
