- Announced to confer the 56th Jnanpith Award to Assamese litterateur Nilmani Phookan Jr.
- He was awarded Padma Shri in 1990, Sahitya Akademi Award in 1981 and Assam Valley Literary Award in 1997.
- It is noteworthy that Phukan is the third Assamese writer to receive the Jnanpith Award.
- Earlier in the year 1979, Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya and Indira Goswami in the year 2000 have been given the Jnanpith Award.
