- The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has launched the eighth edition of Swachh Survekshan (SS) 2023 under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0.
- Swachh Survekshan was launched in the year 2016 by MoHUA as a competitive framework to encourage cities and large scale citizen participation to improve the status of urban sanitation.
- Swachh Survekshan 2023 has focused more on segregation of waste at the source, increasing the waste processing capacity of the cities that generate more waste and reducing the waste going to the dumpsite.
- Indicators with additional weightings have been introduced for phasing out plastics, processing of plastic waste, promoting waste to wonder parks and emphasizing zero waste incidents.
- Ranking of wards within cities is also being promoted through Swachh Survekshan 2023.
- Cities will also be assessed on parameters related to 'open urine' (yellow spots) and 'spit in open spaces' (red spots).
