- The United Nations designated 15th November 2022 as the Day of Eight Billion.
- According to the World Population Prospects Report, 2022, the global population is projected to reach 8 billion on November 15, 2022.
- This population milestone was reached in only 11 years after passing the 7 billion milestone.
- This unprecedented surge in the global population is mainly due to the gradual increase in the human lifespan, which is attributed to improved public health, nutrition, personal hygiene, and medicine.
- It is also because of the high levels of fertilities in certain countries.
- While it took the global population 11 years to reach from 7 to 8 billion, it is expected to take around 15 years (until 2037) to reach the 9-billion-milestone.
- This reveals a decline in the global population growth.
- The global population is expected to reach 9.7 billion in 2050.
