World Wetland Day

  • World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on 2 February to raise awareness about wetlands.
  • It marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted on 2 February 1971 in Ramsar, Iran.
  • On 30 August 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that established 2 February as World Wetlands Day.
  • The theme for World Wetlands Day 2023 is "It's time for wetlands restoration".
  • A wetland is an area of land that is either covered by water or is saturated with water. This includes mangroves, deltas, flood-affected lands, rice-fields, coral reefs, etc.
