GI tag to Basohli painting of Kathua district of Jammu division

  • Basohli painting of Kathua district of Jammu division has got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • Basohli painting is the first independent GI tag of Jammu region.
  • Basohli Painting is in the list of 33 products to get GI tag on March 31, 2023.
  • NABARD had initiated the process of GI tagging these products in December 2020 in consultation with the Department of Handicrafts and Handlooms.
  • This is the first time in the history of GI that Jammu region has got GI tag for handicrafts.
  • Earlier GI tags were given to handicrafts of Kashmir.
  • The GI tag will prevent unauthorized use of these registered Geographical Indication goods by third parties.
  • Basohli painting flourished under Sangram Pal and later Kirpal Pal.
  • The boundaries of these paintings are identified by the use of bright colors such as red, yellow and blue.
