- Himachal Pradesh has become the first Indian state to develop a DNA database for unidentified bodies.
- The process of creating this database started in April 2022.
- So far, the database contains information on 150 DNA samples taken from unidentified bodies.
- The database comes as a relief to families who wander from door to door with photographs and other details in the hope of finding the bodies of their loved ones.
- A database containing DNA details would help in a big way in such cases.
- DNA Profile Databasing and Matching Technology (Smallpond TM Software from USA) was procured in 2022 at a cost of Rs 55 lakhs.
- It has a capacity of around 20,000 DNA profiles which can be further expanded.
