Paraguay's new president

  • Santiago Peña of Paraguay's ruling conservative Colorado party has won the presidential election defeating a center-left challenger.
  • Election officials say Peña had more than 42% of the vote after nearly all ballots had been counted.
  • Efrain Alegre, the candidate of the Concert National coalition, had about 28% of the vote.
  • For more than 70 years, the Colorado Party has dominated the political scene in the South American nation.
