International Plastic Bag Free Day 2023

  • International Plastic Bag Free Day is observed every year on 3rd July.
  • The main goal of the day is to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic.
  • Items made of single use plastic are also contaminating the rivers and oceans.
  • It was first celebrated on July 3, 2008 by Razero, a member of Zero Waste Europe (ZWE).
  • In 2002, Bangladesh became the first country to ban plastic.
  • It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose in a landfill.
  • India has banned single-use plastic from 1 July 2022.
  • About 300 million tons of plastic are produced by humans each year. Only 10-13% of plastic items get recycled.
