- Vijayawada Railway Station has received the 'Green Railway Station' certification by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) with the highest rating of Platinum.
- It received certification for its efforts in improving environmental standards and providing eco-friendly services to passengers.
- The station's rating has been upgraded from gold in 2019 to platinum in 2023.
- Several energy-efficient and solid waste management measures have been taken by the station in recent years.
- Some of these measures include use of star-rated electrical appliances, LED lights, installation of sewage treatment plants for recycling of waste water, periodic testing to check smoke emissions, etc.
- Indian Green Building Council in collaboration with Environment Directorate of Indian Railways has developed the Green Railway Station Rating System.
- The rating is based on six environmental categories: sustainable station facilities, health, hygiene and sanitation, energy efficiency, water efficiency, smart and green initiatives and innovation and growth.
