- Indian Railways will install an AI-based monitoring system to prevent elephant deaths on tracks.
- It has been announced to implement 'Gajraj System' in the forest areas of Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu.
- Indian Railways will install this monitoring system on 700 km route passing through forest areas.
- The total cost of implementation on the 700 km long track will be ₹181 crore.
- Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said this technology was implemented on a 150-km stretch in Assam in 2022. He said that this has proved to be very beneficial.
- The Railway Minister said that this system can alert loco pilots in time about the presence of elephants on the tracks.
- In December 2022, Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) launched encroachment detection system in 11 elephant corridors.
- There is no report of train-elephant collision in these 11 corridors.
- The system works by generating alerts to the train controller, station master, train drivers and other stakeholders whenever an elephant comes on the track.
