- On 11 February, after a seven-year hiatus, former Prime Minister, triathlete and Europhile Alexander Stubb made a triumphant return to politics by winning the Finnish presidency in the election.
- 98 percent of the votes were counted. Stubb received 51.7% of the vote while his Green Party rival, former Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, received 48.4%.
- This is the first election after Finland joined the NATO military alliance.
