- UNEP and WRAP jointly release the Food Waste Index Report 2024.
- The Food Waste Index report has been released just ahead of the 2024 International Zero Waste Day (30 March).
- According to the report, more than one billion miles were wasted globally in 2022.
- 1.05 billion tonnes of food waste generated in 2022. Of the total food waste, 60% occurred at the household level.
- 783 million people worldwide face hunger and almost a third face food insecurity.
- Many lower-middle-income countries do not have adequate systems in place to track progress towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal of halving food waste by 2030.
- Australia, Japan, UK, US only. And the European Union has food waste tracking systems.
- The average level of household food waste across high-income, upper-middle and lower-middle income countries varies by just 7 kilograms per capita, the report said.
