• On May 22, Vietnam's Parliament elected Public Security Minister To Lam as the country's President.

• Lam replaced Vo Van Thuong, who resigned in March following a major anti-corruption campaign. Lam got 472 votes out of 473.

• Lam's election followed the appointment of former deputy Tran Thanh Man as the new Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam on 20 May.

• Led by the General Secretary of the Communist Party, Vietnam has a four-person leadership structure that also includes the President, the Prime Minister, and the head of the National Assembly.
