- He studied law and began his career in the US Department of Justice during the Obama administration.
- In the Trump administration, he has served as Chief of Staff of the Department of Defense, Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council.
- He is the first Indian-American to become the director of the FBI.
- On February 20, 2025, the Senate (the upper house of the United States Congress) approved his appointment by a vote of 51–49.
