On February 22, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das as the Principal Secretary-2 in the Prime Minister's Office.
Introduction to Shaktikanta Das:
Education and Career: Shaktikanta Das is a 1980-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre. He graduated and post-graduated in History from St. Stephen's College, Delhi University, and later obtained a Master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Birmingham, UK. During his administrative career, he held significant positions, including Commissioner of Commercial Taxes and Principal Secretary of Industry.
RBI Governor: In December 2018, Shaktikanta Das took charge as the 25th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Under his leadership, the RBI focused on financial stability and economic growth. He took several crucial steps to support the Indian economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other Roles: Das has also served as India's G20 Sherpa and a member of the 15th Finance Commission. He has represented India at international platforms such as IMF, G20, and BRICS.
Role as Principal Secretary-2:
As Principal Secretary-2, Shaktikanta Das will serve as a close advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His appointment will remain effective throughout the tenure of the Prime Minister or until further orders.
