- He was convicted by a court in Lima of illegally receiving financial support from the Venezuelan government and a Brazilian construction firm for his presidential campaign in 2006 and 2011.
- The court also sentenced his wife Nadine Heredia to 15 years in prison after finding her guilty of money laundering.
- However, after seeking asylum in the Brazilian embassy, she was allowed to travel to Brazil.
- Humala and his wife, who are co-founders of the Nationalist Party, accepted illegal contributions of $3 million from the company for their 2011 presidential election campaign.
- The couple was also accused of accepting $200,000 from Venezuela's Hugo Chavez to support his bid in the 2006 election.
