Germany's new chancellor

  • On May 6, Germany's conservative leader Friedrich Merz has been elected as the country's new Chancellor after a majority in the second round of voting in the lower house.
  • Out of 630 MPs, 325 voted in favour of Mr Merz in the second round, helping him cross the required threshold of 316 votes.
  • Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mr Merz on taking over as Germany's Federal Chancellor.
  • In the first round, only 310 members had voted for Mr Merz, which was seen as a significant blow to his reputation.
