new director of IIT Kharagpur

• Professor Suman Chakravarti has been appointed as the new Director of IIT Kharagpur.

• He is currently the Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur.

• He also holds the prestigious Sir J.C. Bose National Fellowship awarded by the Department of Science and Technology.

• He will replace Professor Amit Patra, who is serving as the Acting Director.

• Chakravarti's tenure will be for five years or till the age of 70, whichever is earlier.

• He was recently awarded the 2026 TWAS Prize in Engineering and Computer Science.
