New President of the United Nations General Assembly


  • Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected President of the United Nations General Assembly.
  • She received 167 out of 193 votes in a secret ballot.
  • The vote was held at the request of Russia as Russia had opposed her candidacy.
  • Baerbock will begin her one-year term in September.
  • She will replace Philemon Yang of Cameroon.
  • Her term will include major events such as the annual UN summit and the 80th anniversary of the organisation.
  • She is the first woman from the Western European group to hold the post.
