- The Government of India will implement a plan to blend 1 percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) into Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) starting in January 2027.
- The government has set a target of 2 percent SAF blending by 2028 and 5 percent by 2030. Initially, this mandate will apply to international flights.
- SAF is a low-carbon alternative aviation fuel that is used in combination with traditional jet fuel.
- Its objective is to reduce carbon emissions from the aviation sector and promote eco-friendly air transport.
- The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have formulated a roadmap for SAF.
- Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum are working towards scaling up SAF production.
