Annapurna scheme

  • The West Bengal government has announced the launch of the "Annapurna Scheme" with the objective of economically empowering women.
  • This scheme is set to be implemented starting June 1, 2026. Under this initiative, eligible women will receive a monthly financial assistance of ₹3,000, which will be transferred directly to their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).
  • The state government states that the aim of this scheme is to provide financial security to women and to enhance the effectiveness of welfare programs.
  • It is regarded as an advanced and expanded version of the "Lakshmi Bhandar Scheme," which is already operational in the state. To ensure the effective implementation of the scheme, the government has completed the necessary administrative and digital preparations.
  • The benefits of this scheme will be available to women aged between 25 and 60 years.
  • However, women who pay income tax, permanent employees of the Central or State government, regular salaried individuals, and those receiving government pensions will not be eligible for this scheme.
  • The government's primary focus is to extend financial assistance to economically vulnerable and needy women, enabling them to become self-reliant and achieve financial stability in their lives.
