India's first autonomous marine shipbuilding center will be established in Andhra Pradesh

  • On March 12, 2026, Sagar Defence Engineering laid the foundation stone for India's first Autonomous Maritime Shipbuilding and Systems Center at the Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour, located in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
  • This project is regarded as a significant initiative aimed at strengthening modern maritime technologies and autonomous shipbuilding capabilities within the country.
  • Facilities related to the manufacturing, testing, and operation of maritime vessels and autonomous systems will be developed at this center.
  • The primary objective of the project is to make India self-reliant in the field of artificial intelligence-based and unmanned maritime systems.
  • For this project, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has allocated approximately 29.58 acres of land in the Juvvaladinne region.
  • Situated along the coast of the Bay of Bengal, this fishing harbour is considered an ideal location for maritime testing and operations, as it offers direct access to open sea routes.
  • The Nellore district is already recognized as a major hub for the fisheries industry and maritime activities, thereby lending strategic significance to this project.
