- The Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill by a voice vote on May 27, 2026.
- The Bill was introduced in the House on May 25, presented by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
- With the passage of this Bill, Assam has become the third state in the country to implement the UCC, following Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
- Furthermore, Assam has also become the first state in Northeast India to give its assent to the Uniform Civil Code legislation.
- This law provides for the implementation of a uniform legal framework for civil matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships.
- According to the State Government, this initiative will help facilitate social reform and ensure equal rights for all citizens.
