‘Priyadarshini’ scheme

  • The Kerala government has taken a significant step towards making public transport more accessible for women and transgender individuals.
  • On June 10, 2026, the state cabinet approved the ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme, under which eligible beneficiaries will be entitled to free travel on State Transport Corporation buses. The scheme will be implemented across the state starting June 15, 2026.
  • A key feature of the scheme is that it will benefit women across all age groups and economic categories.
  • Additionally, the transgender community has been included, a move expected to foster social inclusion. The government believes this initiative will facilitate easier mobility for education, employment, healthcare services, and other essential activities.
  • In the initial phase, the benefits of the ‘Priyadarshini’ scheme will be available only on the ordinary category buses of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).
  • The scheme will be implemented statewide, and no income or age-related eligibility criteria have been stipulated.
  • According to the government, this measure will strengthen access to public transport for women and transgender individuals and reduce the financial burden of their daily commutes.
