- India's digital payment system, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), continues to gain global recognition.
- As part of this ongoing expansion, UPI services were launched on June 16, 2026, at Galeries Lafayette Nice Masséna in the French city of Nice.
- Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal formally inaugurated the facility on this occasion.
- This initiative has been realized through a collaboration between NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) and the French payment service company Lyra Collect.
- Under this new arrangement, Indian tourists and consumers will now be able to easily make digital payments via UPI in Nice as well.
- It is noteworthy that the expansion of UPI in France was already underway; UPI payment facilities were previously made available at the world-famous Eiffel Tower in Paris in 2024.
- Its launch in Nice reflects the growing global acceptance and reach of India's digital payment technology.
