  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore is set to establish its first overseas campus.
  • This campus, to be built in Indonesia, is considered a significant initiative towards giving Indian higher education a new identity on the global stage.
  • The decision was announced on July 7, 2026, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Jakarta, where he held bilateral talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
  • This initiative marks a crucial step towards further strengthening cooperation in education, technology, innovation, and academics between the two nations.
  • IIM Bangalore's first international campus will be established in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, East Java province, Indonesia. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been agreed upon between IIM Bangalore and PT Intelegensia Grahatama for this project.
  • This entity is responsible for the development and operation of the Singhasari SEZ. Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are designated areas where specific policy and administrative facilities are provided to encourage industry, education, trade, and investment.
  • This project will play a pivotal role in taking the educational partnership between India and Indonesia to new heights.
