New use of satellite technology for helicopter landing at HAL Airport

  • For the first time in India, a satellite-based RNP Cat H helicopter approach procedure has been implemented at the airport.
  • This technology will assist in guiding helicopters to the designated landing path with greater precision and safety.
  • RNP, or Required Navigation Performance, is a performance-based navigation system.
  • It involves following a prescribed flight path using satellite navigation signals and the helicopter's onboard avionics, thereby providing pilots with enhanced navigation accuracy during the approach.
  • Meanwhile, Cat H (Category H) is a specific category designated for helicopters.
  • It is utilized at helipads, heliports, and airports where rotary-wing aircraft operate.
  • This new approach procedure was developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). It received approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) following successful flight trials conducted by HAL's test pilots.
  • This initiative is expected to boost the adoption of modern navigation technology for safer and more precise helicopter landings.
