ISRO launched EOS-05 using GSLV-F17

  • On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone in the space sector.
  • ISRO successfully launched the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The launch took place at approximately 2:55 AM on September 4. The GSLV-F17 rocket, measuring about 51.7 meters in length, carried the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite—weighing 2,367 kilograms—into space.
  • Approximately 18 minutes after liftoff, the EOS-05 was successfully placed into the designated Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).
  • EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation imaging satellite designed to provide continuous and detailed imagery of the Earth's surface from space.
  • A key feature of the satellite is that it will eventually operate in a Geosynchronous Orbit at an altitude of approximately 36,000 kilometers, enabling continuous monitoring of India and the surrounding regions.
  • While many Earth observation satellites in Low Earth Orbit capture images of a location at different times, the EOS-05, operating in Geosynchronous Orbit, will be capable of continuously monitoring a vast area.
