- He died due to cardiac arrest.
- He gave the santoor a classical status and elevated it along with other traditional and famous instruments such as the sitar and the sarod.
- Earlier the santoor was a little known musical instrument of Jammu and Kashmir.
- Pandit Shivkumar Sharma was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
