- Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been awarded the 2022 UNESCO Peace Prize for her efforts to welcome refugees.
- All jury members, including jury chairman and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, were impressed by Merkel’s courageous decision to welcome more than 1.2 million refugees from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Eritrea in 2015.

- She is trained as a physicist and had entered politics after the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall.
- In 2005 national elections, Merkel became Germany’s first female chancellor, and one of the leading figures of the European Union.
