‘Mission Ornamental Fish 2031’

  • On September 3, 2026, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan released the strategic action plan for ‘Mission Ornamental Fish 2031’ at Agatti, Lakshadweep.
  • The primary objective of this initiative is to systematically promote the rearing, breeding, conservation, trade, and export of ornamental fish—colorful and attractive fish kept in aquariums—within India.
  • Ornamental fisheries represent an emerging sector within India's fisheries industry, encompassing the production and trade of various types of colorful fish kept in aquariums.
  • Through ‘Mission Ornamental Fish 2031’, the government aims to transform this sector from a mere hobby or small-scale business into a significant avenue for employment, self-employment, entrepreneurship, and exports.
  • Under this strategic action plan, special emphasis will be placed on integrating fish farmers, fishermen, youth, women, self-help groups, and small entrepreneurs into ornamental fish farming.
  • To achieve this, the initiative will promote modern breeding techniques, quality fish seed, scientific rearing practices, disease control, water quality management, and modern aquarium technology.
  • A key objective of this initiative is to meet domestic demand for ornamental fish while simultaneously boosting India's export potential.
  • The diverse climate and biodiversity across various regions of India provide favorable conditions for ornamental fish farming, creating new economic opportunities in rural and coastal areas.
