Arun Goyal appointed new Election Commissioner

  • Arun Goyal has been appointed as the Election Commissioner.
  • He is appointed by the President. His appointment is effective from the date he assumes office.
  • He is a retired IAS officer of 1985 batch of Punjab Cadre.
  • He will be joined by Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey in the Election Commission.
  • He is in line to become the next Chief Election Commissioner after Rajeev Kumar leaves office in February 2025. He will remain in office till December 2027.
  • A person can hold the office of Election Commissioner or Chief Election Commissioner for six years or till the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
