A new species of beetle in India


  • According to a paper published in the New Zealand-based journal Zootaxa, a new species of beetle has been discovered in India.
  • The beetle is very important for forensic science as it helps in ascertaining the time of death of an animal or a human being.
  • 'Omorgus khandesh' is necrophagous hence it is also called keratin beetle.
  • Blowflies are the first to arrive during body decomposition while keratin feeders reach the last successional stage.
  • The bug was discovered by scientist Aparna Sureshchandra Kalavate. He works with the Zoological Survey of India in Pune.
  • Co-author of this paper is Werner P Strumpfer.
  • The new species is from the Trogidae family. Now, there are total 14 species of this family in India.
