- The name change took place at a special function on the occasion of Sachin Tendulkar's birthday.
- It is also the 25th anniversary of the back-to-back centuries scored by Sachin Tendulkar against Australia in 1998.
- Sachin Tendulkar scored 143 against Australia in April 1998 in a One Day International (ODI) named 'Desert Storm' at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
- He scored 134 in the final of the Coca-Cola Cup, a tri-series between India, Australia and New Zealand.
- Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia also paid tribute to Tendulkar on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
- At the Sydney Cricket Ground, a set of gates is named after him and West Indies batsman Brian Lara.
