- On 27 May, Goa state Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai conferred the Jnanpith Award, the country's highest literary honour, on Goan writer Damodar Maujo.
- He also said that Maujo is "a symbol of Konkani literary culture".
- Maujo has 25 books published in Konkani and one in English. Many of his books have also been translated into different languages.
- Moujo's famous novel 'Carmelin' received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983.
- The novel was published in 1981 and translated into Hindi, Marathi, English, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, Oriya and Maithili languages.
