  • Coal Miners Day is celebrated every year on 04 May to honor the efforts and contribution of coal miners in extracting coal.
  • India's first coal mine was established in 1774. The site of this mine was the Raniganj Coalfield situated on the banks of the Damodar River.
  • The mine was operated by John Summer and Suetonius Grant Heatley of the East India Company.
  • In 1575 the first coal mine was opened in Scotland.
  • May 04 was declared as National Coal Miners Day by the Government of India in 2010.
