- The Indian Institute of Technology will open its first overseas campus in Tanzania in October 2023 with a batch of 50 undergraduate students and 20 master's students.
- New IIT campus will be set up in Zanzibar under IIT Madras.
- Zanzibar will be one of the three campuses of IIT which will be located outside India. Other campuses will be set up in Abu Dhabi and Kuala Lumpur.
- These campuses are designed to serve their respective area. The Zanzibar campus will serve the Greater East African region.
- In the first year, the institute will offer Data Science and Artificial Intelligence courses.
- The Zanzibar campus of IIT will have the same international recognition that IIT Madras has.
- Zanzibar students will finally have access to the same benefits that Madras students enjoy.
- Admission will be a three-way process consisting of an entrance test, a one-month preparatory program and a personal interview.
