Former RBI Governor S Venkataramanan passes away

  • S Venkitaramanan, who was the RBI Governor from December 1990 to December 1992, died at the age of 92.
  • He served as the 18th RBI Governor, during which India faced a balance of payments crisis.
  • During his tenure, India adopted the IMF's stabilization program under which the rupee was devalued.
  • He also served as Finance Secretary to the Government of India from 1985 to 1989.
  • Before his appointment as RBI Governor, he was an advisor to the Government of Karnataka.
  • He was born in the town of Nagercoil in the Padmanathapuram division of the princely state of Travancore.
