Climate Change Performance Index 2024

  • India has ranked 7th in the recently released Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) – 2024, underscoring its significant role and contribution to the ongoing global efforts aimed at mitigating climate change.
  • The CCPI, published annually since 2005, is an independent monitoring tool to track countries' climate protection performance. It increases transparency in national and international climate policy and enables comparison of climate protection efforts and progress across different countries.
  • It is published by Germanwatch, NewClimate Institute and Climate Action Network International.
  • India's ranking in CCPI 2024: India moved up from 8th position in CCPI 2023 to 7th position in CCPI 2024. Interestingly, due to the absence of countries in the first three positions, India is effectively ranked fourth in global climate performance.
  • GHG Emissions and Energy Use: India ranks 9th in GHG emissions and 10th in energy use among the countries assessed, mainly due to its low per capita energy use, which is a factor strengthening its climate position.
  • Moreover, in the per capita GHG category, the country is on track to meet the below 2°C benchmark.
