Minority Rights Day

• Minority Rights Day is celebrated every year on 18 December.

• The United Nations adopted and disseminated the Statement on Individual Rights Belonging to Religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities on December 18, 1992.

• Minority Rights Day is celebrated in India to raise awareness about freedom and equal opportunities for minorities.

• A community that is socially, politically and economically non-dominant and low in population within a country is considered a minority.

• The rights of these minorities are fundamental to the principles of equality and justice.

• The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) was constituted in 1992 under the National Commission for Minorities Act to protect the rights of minorities in India.
