- The theme of World Population Day 2024 is "Leave no one behind, count everyone".
- The then Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme established World Population Day in 1989.
- The day was established as a result of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was celebrated on 11 July 1987.
- The day was first celebrated on 11 July 1990. In December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to continue celebrating World Population Day.
