T V Somanathan appointed as new Cabinet Secretary

• Senior IAS officer TV Somanathan has been appointed as Cabinet Secretary.

• He will replace Rajiv Gauba, who is completing his five-year term this month.

• Somnathan, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, is currently the Union Finance Secretary.

• Meanwhile, the government may soon appoint a new Union Home Secretary. Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla's term ends on August 22.

• According to a Personnel Ministry order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Somanathan as Cabinet Secretary for a term of two years with effect from August 30, 2024.
