Argentina announces withdrawal from WHO

  • Argentina's President Javier Milei recently decided to withdraw the country's membership from the World Health Organization (WHO).
  •  This move was prompted by significant disagreements with WHO's policies and health management during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni stated that the WHO's guidelines led to "the largest shutdown in human history," and Argentina will not tolerate interference from any international organization in its sovereignty.
  • This decision follows the move by U.S. President Donald Trump, who also withdrew from the WHO, a decision that began on his first day in office on January 21, 2025.
  • Argentina's annual contribution to the WHO is approximately $8 million, which is a small portion of the organization's total budget.
  • However, this decision will not have a direct impact on Argentina's healthcare quality, as the country does not receive any financial assistance from the WHO.
