Four new Ramsar sites

  • India has added four new Ramsar sites.
  • With this, the total number of Ramsar sites has increased to 89.
  • Ahead of World Wetlands Day (2 February 2025), the government announced that four sites have been added to the list of Ramsar sites in the country.
  • These sites are Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary and Theerthangal Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu, Khecheopalri Wetland in Sikkim and Udhwa Lake in Jharkhand.
  • India still has the highest number of Ramsar sites in Asia and third in the world.
