The Haryana Government has launched the "Witness Protection Scheme 2025", aimed at ensuring the safety of witnesses in criminal cases.
Under this scheme, witnesses are classified into three categories based on the level of threat they face:
- Category-A: High risk, where the witness or their family is under serious threat.
- Category-B: Medium risk, where the witness or their family faces some threat.
- Category-C: Low risk, where the witness or their family faces minimal threat.
Various measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of witnesses, such as:
- Preventing the direct confrontation of the witness and the accused.
- Monitoring the witness's emails and phone calls.
- Changing the witness's phone number or providing an unlisted number.
- Providing security equipment to the witness and their family members, such as doors, CCTV, alarms, and fences.
- Providing physical protection, bodyguards, and regular patrols by PCR vans for the witness and their family.
