- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new Pamban railway bridge connecting Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and mainland India on the occasion of Ram Navami on 6 April 2025.
- The bridge is India's first vertical lift sea bridge, with a length of 2.05 km and is located 22 meters above sea level.
The key features of the new bridge include-
Vertical lift mechanism: The central part of the bridge can rise up to 17 meters, paving the way for large ships. It requires only one person to operate it.
Faster and safer rail traffic: Trains can run at a speed of 75 kmph on the new bridge, while the speed limit on the old bridge was 10 kmph. This has reduced travel time significantly.
The project has been constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), with technical expertise from IIT Chennai, IIT Bombay and international consultant TYPSA.
