International Labour Day

• International Labour Day is celebrated every year on May 1 to pay tribute to the contribution of workers across the world.

• In 1886, around 2,00,000 American workers demanded eight-hour working day and a major strike took place.

• Later, the movement turned violent in Chicago. This was remembered as the Haymarket affairs.

• International Labour Day was first celebrated on May 1, 1889 by a coalition of socialist parties in Europe.
