  • On December 30, former Bangladeshi Prime Minister and chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Begum Khaleda Zia, passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness.
  • She had been admitted to the hospital on November 23 due to serious heart and lung problems.
  • Khaleda Zia was Bangladesh's first female prime minister and served two terms.
  • She served as Prime Minister of Bangladesh from 1991 to 1996 and again from 2001 to 2006.
  • She was also the second female prime minister in the Muslim world, after Benazir Bhutto.
