India's first LNG-diesel dual-fuel DEMU train by Indian Railways

  • Under its sustainable rail initiatives, Indian Railways has commenced the operation of India's first LNG-diesel dual-fuel DMU train at Sabarmati in Ahmedabad.
  • This launch marks a significant step towards environmentally friendly rail operations by reducing reliance on conventional diesel fuel.
  • The 1,400 HP DMU train coaches have been converted to a dual-fuel system using liquefied natural gas (LNG).
  • Under the new fuel configuration, approximately 40% of diesel consumption has been replaced with LNG.
  • The converted coaches successfully completed field trials, covering a distance of over 2,000 kilometers without any operational issues.
  • Significant environmental benefits, including a reduction in carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions, have been highlighted.
